Touring Caravan CRiS Check Info

A caravan CRiS check is definitely worth getting when buying a used caravan. CRiS stands for Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme. Purchasing a used caravan can pose just as many risks as a used car can. You could accidentally buy a stolen caravan and will not be allowed to keep it or the money you gave up for it. Shockingly a used caravan on the market could be a cast off from an insurance company. These could not be roadworthy and may be dangerous. CRiS caravan registration can help you avoid all of this.

CRiS Caravan Registration
By registering your caravan with CRiS you will learn if the caravan has been

•    Reported stolen

•    Recorded as on finance

•    Written off by insurance company

•    Registered with the current owner and confirm their identity.

VIN Number
Every caravan made after 1992 is registered on the CRiS records by way of a 17 digit number. The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is sent on a document to the registered owner of the caravan. Caravans manufactured before this year, or imported ones, can be CRiS registered to make things simpler in the future. In fact, it is a requirement for a lot of insurance companies to have this check before they are willing to insure you.

New Ownership
It is the buyer’s and the seller’s responsibility to make sure that the ownership is officially passed onto the new owner. You can do this by presenting the caravan’s CVR2 document to CRiS. This will need to be filled out by the seller and the buyer (as with a V5 for cars) and will have a small chargeable fee.

A caravan CRiS check costs £14.95 (at time of writing) and can be obtained from the HPI website. It is a small price to pay for making sure that your used caravan will be safe to use. CRiS caravan registration will give you peace of mind when you take your caravan on the road.
